Since 2004 the valley has been a protected park and a World Heritage Site. Nature is the main attraction in Val d' Orcia: it is unspoilt and incredibly beautiful with its colours always changing, depending on the season. This is a landscape which inspired Many Renaissance painters of the Siena school.

Montalcino lies to the north- west of Monte Amiata, towards the end of the Val d’Orcia (Orcia Valley) and on the boundary with the province of Grosseto. It is a fantastic example of a typical, medieval small town.

Its dominant position offers splendid views which look over the entire Val d’Orcia . Indeed , there is a fortress, built in medieval times , which the population used to impede the advance of enemies and defend itself. It has now been restored and is open to the public. Today, Montalcino is the most prestigious and characteristic example of a historic town in the Val d’Orcia.
